Held May 6-10 in SGIA's state-of-the-art facility in Fairfax, Virginia, attendees learned basic and advanced techniques through a combination of lecture and hands-on instruction.
Industry veteran Charlie Taublieb guided students through stretching, coating, exposing and setting up the press. The five-day Workshop also covered advanced screen making techniques using the latest high-tech equipment, press setup and parameters for proper flashing and curing.
"I had heard from other instructors that had been through the class, that it was really beneficial for advanced techniques," said Brian Hoag, the Media Arts instructor at Roseville Area High School in Roseville, Minnesota. "It's been a great experience." Designed for shops that want to step up their game to become professional and profitable garment screen printers, the Totally T-Shirts! Workshop was a fully immersed experience for attendees on all levels. For more information about this, and other SGIA educational opportunities, visit SGIA.org.

Sales grew just 0.6 percent in 2012 (from all sources, not just printing); although 1.4 percent growth in the fourth quarter was a significant improvement over a 0.4 percent decline in the first quarter of 2012. While the annual growth was a small, seeing positive growth in three of four quarters in 2012 was encouraging when viewed against declines in 13 out of 16 previous quarters, stretching back to the first quarter of 2008.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has revised several key elements of its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), and these changes will require every printing operation and supplier to change their current HCS program and conduct employee training. The changes now allow the HCS to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) and will require vendors to follow a prescribed hazard determination for products, change container labels, and issue new Safety Data Sheets to replace Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
Because the changes are quite extensive, OSHA has provided a long phase-in period that will cover several years, but the first deadline for employee training on the new requirements is December 1, 2013. PIA Takes On Another
. In an open letter to Costco, Michael Makin, PIA president, encouraged the organization to reconsider, telling the membership warehouse club that "contrary to the claims made in your article, the use of paper and print on paper isn't depleting our forests, overwhelming our landfills or causing global warming.
In fact, just the opposite is true, and companies calling for less print or a go-paperless campaign don't take into account that paper, and print on paper, is a renewable, recyclable resource and is a sustainable way to communicate.
He commended Costco for bringing attention to the topic and reiterated that printing is the only medium with a one-time carbon footprint, while all other media require energy from non-renewable fuels every time they are viewed.
