Engaging Elected Officials Essential to Effective
Effective Government Affairs advocacy is a two-step process that engages Members of Congress on Capitol Hill and back at home in the districts they represent.
This year in June NPES members joined Printing Industries of America colleagues in visiting over fifty congressional offices during the Print's Voice 2012 Capitol Hill fly-in.
Following up on the fly-in, September saw executives of Chicago area NPES members meeting with U.S. Representative Joe Walsh (R-8-IL) during the Congressman's visit to Xeikon America's plant in Itasca, Illinois. Walsh represents the 8th District of Illinois that includes eighteen NPES member companies - the most of any district in the country.
He serves on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that has jurisdiction over the United States Postal Service, and is the Chairman of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Taxation & Capital Access - all important to NPES.
In October NPES's local Congressman, Gerald E. Connolly (D-11-VA), visited the Association's staff in Reston, Virginia, and Congressman Ted Deutch (D-21-FL) met with Oce employees at the company's Boca Raton, Florida headquarters.
Connolly also serves on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee; Deutch is a member of the House Foreign Affairs and Judiciary Committees.
With postal reform a top NPES government affairs priority, the visits provided excellent opportunities to stress the importance of the U.S. Postal Service as an indispensable business partner of the domestic mailing industry that provides over eight million private sector jobs in America.
All of the meetings underscored the urgent need to enact postal reform before the 112th Congress adjourns.
More district plant visits are planned for 2013, and NPES is eager to help its members schedule such events.
